Mountains are home to at least one-tenth of the world’s population — an estimated 600 million people who come from rich, ancient and diverse cultures.

Mountains in Ghana
Mountains as a type of landform and also natural creation play very meaningful role in the cultural, social, and economic lives of man especially when they are put to good use. A mountain is a type of highland. In essence, it is a land area that is significantly higher in altitude of over 500 metres above sea level than the adjoining lowland. It is also a disturbed area of land that could be as a result of such process as diastrophism or volcanicity.

Mountains provide series of valuable resources to man. These range from natural resources, both renewable and non-renewable to communications.

In Ghana, there are about five (5) major groups of mountains. They include the following:

1. THE AKWAPEM- TOGO RANGES.
2. SOUTHERN VOLTAIAN PLATEAU (The Central Highlands
or The Mampong-Mpraeso-Koforidua ridge)
3. FOREST DISSECTED PLATEAU (The Plateau of

    southwest)
4. GAMBAGA ESCARPMENT (The Plateau of north and
    northeast)
5. THE SHAI,OSUDOKU AND KROBO HILLS (inselbergs or
    isolated hills)

However, each group comprises series of prominent mountains or highlands named after a village or town.
1. AKWAPEM – TOGO RANGES
A range simply refers to a group of mountains or hills forming a long stretch of highland. Akwapem-Togo Ranges are spectacular examples and comprise important mountains like Akwapem, Yogaga, Gemi, and Afadjato.

They are also good examples of Fold Mountains found in Ghana. They form part of the ridges and escarpments bordering the Voltaian sandstone basin and in particular forming the eastern and southeastern boundary of the basin.
