IMPORTANCE OF MOUNTAiNS
All major rivers in the World and indeed in Ghana originate in mountain
and highland areas (e.g. River Birim from the Atewa range). More than
half of humanity relies on the fresh water provided by these 'water
towers' for drinking, domestic use, agriculture and industry. Careful
management is a challenge which mankind must face
Mountain farmers typically combine agriculture, forestry and livestock in
a balanced way to meet multiple objectives that are both production and
conservation oriented.
Mountains are profitable mining grounds that produce minerals such as
lead, copper, zinc etc.
The beauty and diversity of landscapes, opportunities for sports and many
cultural resources attract many people to mountains each year.
